Cleanings & Gum Treatment
We recommend that you have your teeth cleaned every 6 months. During this visit we will do a comprehensive examination of your gums, take measurement of your bone levels (pocket depths) supporting your teeth, and review your home care with oral hygiene instructions. During this visit we also encourage application of topical fluoride, proven to decrease your risk cavities.
For some patients it has been awhile since their last dental visit. In some of these cases, a deeper cleaning (or Scaling & Root Planing, SRP) may be required. This is needed to remove deep plaque or calculus deposits and flush out bacteria that may be causing bleeding, infection, and sore gums (gum disease). A deep cleaning generally takes 2-4 visits and will require local anesthesia to insure your comfort. After SRP treatment, maintenance is required every 3-6 months, depending upon the severity of the case to monitor for stability.
Gum disease is the #1 leading cause for tooth loss in adults. It is critical to catch this disease early and treat it aggressively. Therefore, in some cases we may also recommend the placement of ARESTIN®, a locally administered antibiotic. ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1 mg, is indicated as an adjunct to SRP procedures for reduction of pocket depth in patients with gum disease. Clinical studies show that ARESTIN® plus SRP achieves greater pocket depth reduction than SRP alone.
